The story
Kimihiro Watanuki is a high school student plagued by ayakashi spirits, both of which are invisible to everyone else but him. The series begins when Watanuki stumbles, seemingly by chance, into a shop that grants wishes. The shop is owned by Yūko Ichihara, a mysterious witch of many names and esoteric renown. For a price, she offers to grant Watanuki's wish to be rid of the spirits. The price, according to Yūko, must be of equal value; so, as payment, he must become Yūko's temporary, part-time cook and housekeeper.
What it’s like
Dusk-blue streets, rain on glass, and a shop crowded with incense smoke, lacquered cabinets and glowing trinkets give this anime a hushed, dreamlike atmosphere, with slim Clamp-style figures drawn against richly saturated interiors of deep red, teal and amber. Sound leans on quiet ambient strings, wind chimes and long pauses, so the spirits arrive as sudden shifts in the stillness. Episodes unfold as self-contained, unhurried encounters with wishes and their costs, leavened by dry, teasing dialogue and a steady current of melancholy. The intensity is moderate: a few grotesque spirit designs and brief eerie jolts, with some blood and unsettling imagery but no sustained gore, and only light sexual innuendo. It suits a rainy evening, a late-night rewatch or quiet background viewing with a cup of tea. It is for viewers who like folkloric, slightly uncanny storytelling, bittersweet character warmth, and an aesthetic that rewards slow attention.
