The story
When disgraced Harvard philosophy scholar Jack Griffin loses out on his dream job, he is forced to return to Toledo, Ohio, and work as a high school Advanced Placement biology teacher.
What it’s like
Bright, flat, fluorescent-lit classrooms with a sitcom's tidy, evenly lit staging: the look is bright and broad rather than moody, with wide two-shots, quick cuts between office, classroom and cafeteria, and a bouncy multi-camera rhythm that leaves room for big reaction faces. The palette is primary-school cheerful, all beige hallways, primary-coloured posters and sweaters, and the soundtrack is cheerful incidental pop and jaunty stings that underline every snappy exchange. The vibe is playful and irreverent, a dash of mischief in a warm, low-stakes setting, the kind of show that suits a lazy weeknight, a comfort rewatch, or something on in the background while you fold laundry. Its pacing is brisk and the emotional register stays light, with a self-absorbed, bitter man slowly, grudgingly warming to the cast of misfit teachers and students around him. Intensity is low: crude jokes, bickering and mild sexual innuendo, but no real violence, gore or dread. It is for people who want big laughs, eccentric characters and a gentle, goofy workplace comedy.
