The story

World War II vet Paul Sutton falls for a pregnant and unwed woman who persuades him -- during their first encounter -- to pose as her husband so she can face her family.

What it’s like

Golden-hour light spills over sun-ripened vineyards in long, slow pans, and the Northern California valley feels hot, dusty and sweetly fragrant, with grapes hanging heavy on the vine and shadows stretching across rows of wooden trellis. Alfonso Arau frames his lovers in warm, classical compositions, lingering on hands, faces and the rhythm of harvest work, while the score is lush and sentimental, swelling with strings and guitar. The vibe is wistful and old-fashioned, a romantic melodrama with a postwar ache beneath its sunlight, suited to a lazy afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or an evening when you want to be swept up in something tender. Pacing is unhurried, with the emotional register running from playful to earnest to quietly devastated, following a weary veteran slowly opening his heart to a woman who must face a disapproving family. Intensity is low: some tension and an emotional sting about abandonment and pregnancy, with no graphic violence and only a brief, non-explicit intimacy. It is for viewers who love sweeping, sun-drenched love stories and slow-burn sincerity.
