The story

A young woman meets a failing musician who launches her singing career, but their relationship is doomed when people assume he's with her for her fame and fortune.

What it’s like

Warm, saturated Bollywood frames with sweeping handheld movement through crowded concert halls, dim bars lit in amber and red, and close-ups that hold on faces during quiet moments. The music does much of the emotional work: big soaring ballads, a wounded piano-and-vocal sound in the slower numbers, and stage performances staged with bright, glossy spectacle. The mood is tragic and romantic, sliding between hopeful glow and sorrowful drift, with a heavy undercurrent of heartbreak that the songs keep returning to. Its people are a gifted singer and a talented but self-destructive musician, and the arc follows a relationship strained by ambition, pride and the drinking that eats away at him. The emotional register is melodramatic and sincere, with long stretches of sung longing. Intensity is moderate: some scenes of drunken anger and shouting, a suicide-adjacent thread, and no graphic violence. Best for viewers who enjoy musical romance and want to cry over a good song, especially on a rainy evening with the lights low.
