The story

Microsoft's Age of Empires: Gold Edition is an epic real-time strategy title that collects the original Age of Empires and its Rise of Rome expansion set onto a single tactics-packed disc. Spanning more than 10,000 years of game time Age of Empires: Gold features three entirely new campaigns that showcase the bloody battles of Rome, in addition to four brand new civilizations with their own strengths and weaknesses and dozens of different scenarios. Whether you choose to win by world domination, economic victory, or a combination of both, the choice of how your rule the planet is ultimately yours.

What it’s like

Isometric, top-down maps of hand-painted forests, sand and grassland, rendered in saturated late-nineties PC palettes: lush greens, ochre deserts, and clusters of tiny villagers who scuttle between farms and mines under a warm, slightly grainy haze. The sound is a loop of bright, busy activity (axes thudding on timber, horns and war cries drifting up from the fog of war, a folk-tinged score that swells and recedes with each skirmish). Sessions move at a steady, absorbing tempo: you build quietly for long stretches, then a sudden raid or siege breaks the calm and the clatter rises. The vibe is industrious and gently competitive, a sunlit afternoon at the desk that can stretch into a late evening. Violence is present but abstract: small sprites fall in cartoonish clusters, with no gore, blood or graphic cruelty, and the stakes stay strategic rather than visceral. It suits players who enjoy planning, watching an economy grow from nothing, and rewarding themselves with the slow build toward a decisive push. It is well suited to a comfortable weekend session or a nostalgic return to the classic RTS format, and to anyone who wants tactical depth without dread or harsh imagery.
