The story

Golden Realms expands Age of Wonders III’s empire building mechanics and introduces bucket loads of new content. These new features are used in random maps, new scenarios and a new story campaign, where Halfling survivors settle in a distant land filled with danger and treasures never seen before.

What it’s like

Warm, painterly fantasy maps unfurl in turn after turn, with rolling green provinces, gilded banners and sun-drenched hills that shift to frost, desert and gloom as you push across the world. The interface is busy but tidy: parchment-toned panels, crisp unit portraits and a bright, bustling board that rewards a slow look. Music is a gentle orchestral score that swells when a city falls or a hero levels, and otherwise recedes into the background, with bird and wind ambience under the clink of building and the thud of skirmishes. Combat is turn-based and fairly bloodless in tone, with spells flaring in colour and creatures collapsing in puffs of light rather than gore, though fantasy battles carry some brief cartoonish violence. Pacing is unhurried and cumulative: each session is a sequence of small decisions, expanding borders, tending cities, and planning a campaign that builds toward a few satisfying climaxes. The mood is cheerful and absorbing, a comfortable, low-pressure strategy experience for a lazy weekend, an evening at the desk, or anyone who wants a long game to dip into and out of. It suits players who enjoy empire building, map-watching and gradual discovery, and it is a good pick for solo play or a relaxed co-op session.
