Airplane II: The Sequel

Directed by Ken Finkleman

The story

A faulty computer causes a passenger space shuttle to head straight for the sun, and man-with-a-past Ted Striker must save the day and get the shuttle back on track – again – all the while trying to patch up his relationship with Elaine.

What it’s like

Bright, flat studio lighting over pastel-and-chrome 1980s sets, with a retro-futurist shuttle cabin and cheerfully unconvincing model shots of space. The camera mostly sits still in tidy medium frames, letting the gags land in the middle of the frame, and the score is a bouncy synth-and-brass pulse that keeps the energy up. The vibe is goofy, anarchic and deliberately silly, with deadpan performances from a cast playing it straight, and the pace is brisk, with one-liners, visual puns and background jokes arriving faster than you can track. It suits a lazy Saturday afternoon, a group watch with friends, or a comfort rewatch when you want to laugh without thinking. The intensity is light: slapstick peril, cartoonish fights, bawdy innuendo and a few crude jokes, but no real gore and nothing frightening. It is for people who love spoof comedy, classic one-liners and the kind of absurd, self-aware silliness that doesn't take itself seriously, and who are happy with a sequel that leans into its own nonsense.
