The story

A scientific expedition sets out for Borneo to seek a flower called the Blood Orchid, which could grant extended life. Meanwhile, they run afoul of snakes and each other.

What it’s like

Murky jungle greens and humid haze, shot mostly in daylight under flat, overcast canopy light, with the occasional garish splash of red from the orchid as the one bright accent. The camera is largely handheld and busy in the undergrowth, cutting quickly between wide shots of dense foliage and close, jittery views of the creatures, with digital sheen and little of the tactile grit a film like this might want. The sound is a steady mix of insect drone, rustling leaves and a brassy, pulsing action score that swells whenever a snake lunges. Vibe: cheesy, tongue-in-cheek creature-feature fun with a sweaty B-movie charm. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a rewatch with friends, or a bit of ironic late-night viewing. Pacing is brisk, with the team dwindling as betrayals and attacks stack up, and the characters stay broad: a pragmatic leader, a sceptical scientist, a double-dealing rival. Intensity is moderate: frequent snake attacks with some bloody bites and gore, a few violent deaths, and no sexual content. Best for viewers who want undemanding, gleefully silly monster action rather than anything gentle or sombre.
