The story
This new chapter of “Sex and the City” follows Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.
What it’s like
Bright, glossy Manhattan daylight and warm apartment interiors, with the city streets shot in a polished, saturated digital look: brownstone stoops, rooftop terraces, cafe tables set against sidewalks full of foot traffic and honking cabs. The palette leans on creams, jewel-toned fashion and pastel brunch colors, and the camera lingers on well-dressed faces in close, conversational two-shots. Scenes move at a chatty, comfortable clip, with frequent quips and long talky lunches broken up by quieter moments of reflection, and the score is breezy and pop-leaning, often just a light tune under dialogue. The mood is wistful and affectionate, a warm comedy-drama with an undercurrent of aging, grief and second-guessing, the sort of thing that suits a lazy weekend afternoon or a comfort rewatch with a glass of wine. Its arcs follow three long-time friends rethinking love, work and motherhood as their lives shift in unexpected directions. Intensity is low: some strong language, frank sexual talk and adult situations, but no violence or gore, and little that is frightening. It is for viewers who enjoy witty, character-driven stories about friendship and midlife in a stylish city setting.
