The story
Angband is an open-source roguelike, the goal of which is to survive 100 floor levels of the fortress Angband in order to defeat Morgoth. The player begins in a town where they can buy equipment before beginning the descent. Once in the maze-like fortress, the player encounters traps, monsters, equipment, and hidden doors. With the help of found objects and enchantments, the player's attack and defense power increases, and can even neutralize specific attacks. Angband gameplay emphasises combat and careful resource management. The player has finite health points, and death is final. Although Angband records the player's progress to a save file, it does not allow one to resume a saved game in which the player character has already died. If the player overcomes Morgoth on the 100th floor, the game continues, and the player may continue descending to further floors. The levels are procedurally generated, allowing for a unique game in every play.
What it’s like
Dark terminal screens built from ASCII glyphs: a lone @ moving through a grid of dots, walls drawn as hash marks, monsters as single letters that flicker in color against black. Light is a small pool of torchlight that shrinks as the descent deepens, so every corridor feels like a held breath. Sound is nearly absent, a few terminal beeps and the occasional chime when something useful turns up, which leaves the silence heavy and the tension in the reading. Pacing is slow and deliberate, with long stretches of inventory juggling, shopping in town, and cautious step-by-step exploration, broken by sudden, sharp fights. The vibe is austere, cerebral dread, best suited to a rainy evening or a quiet hour alone when there is time to plan. Violence is abstract and text-based: hits and deaths arrive as lines of prose, with no gore rendered on screen, but permadeath means one bad choice can erase hours of progress, and the fear of losing a character lands hard. For players who love tactical resource management, emergent discovery, and the long, Tolkien-flavored grind toward a distant final boss.
