The story

Friends Elephant and Piggie are playing outside when it starts to rain, and then they must decide what to do.

What it’s like

Clean, bare pages with a pale background, a few thick black outlines, and a sparse palette of grey elephant and pink pig, so the whole book reads like a stage set where only the characters matter. Speech balloons carry nearly all the story, set in large, simple type that a young reader can sound out or an adult can read aloud in a warm, dry voice. The mood is cheerful and gently anxious, the kind of small, bright worry a child feels when the sky changes mid-game, and it resolves quickly into reassurance. It is short enough for a single sitting on a quiet afternoon, a bedtime reread, or a lap-and-cuddle story with a wiggly toddler. Nothing frightening happens; the only stakes are wet feet and a little indecision, handled with soft humour and affection. It suits parents and young readers who want something gentle, funny, and calm, and anyone who enjoys a minimalist picture book where friendship carries the whole page.
