The story

Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals run rampant and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear. Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human—the Batman. His one-man crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications.

What it’s like

Sleek, shadow-heavy 2D animation with art deco skyscrapers, smoky back rooms and rain-slicked streets under sodium-yellow streetlamps, the palette mostly inky blues and browns broken by sharp accents of red and gold. The mood is 1930s noir: tense, glamorous and a little sour, like a detective story that has wandered into a superhero one. Episodes move briskly through conversations in offices and nightclubs, punctuated by stylized, fast action with clean silhouettes and occasional blunt, bloody moments; the violence is real but never lingers on gore, and the menace comes more from corruption and fear than from explicit cruelty. Bruce Wayne's arc is one of isolation and reluctant trust, as he slowly finds unlikely allies among honest cops and reformers while his crusade grows costlier. It suits a late evening watch, a focused binge with a drink nearby, or anyone who wants Batman as a brooding, grown-up mystery. It is a fit for fans of classic noir and of the old animated Batman style who are happy with action that is intense rather than gentle.
