The story

Guts, a wandering mercenary, joins the Band of the Hawk after being defeated in a duel by Griffith, the group's leader and founder. Together, they dominate every battle, but something menacing lurks in the shadows.

What it’s like

Hand-drawn 1997 cel animation with warm, muddy palettes: ochre campfires, grey-green forest dusk, pale blood-red skies, and bright flashes of steel against dark armour. Sword fights are rendered with weight and smears of motion, while quieter scenes linger on rain-soaked camps, wooden tavern interiors and slow pans across battlefields. The score is orchestral and mournful, with sparse piano and choral swells that rise over sudden silence. Vibe: brooding, epic and bleak, a dark medieval tapestry about loyalty and ambition. It suits a late-night watch alone, when you want to be pulled into something heavy and immersive. Intensity is high: frequent graphic violence and gore, sexual abuse and sexual violence that is depicted disturbingly, and scenes of cruelty and despair. Pacing is episodic, building toward long stretches of slaughter and emotional collapse. The central arc follows a hardened mercenary whose loyalty to a charismatic leader turns into obsession and betrayal. For viewers who want dark fantasy with uncompromising stakes, and who can handle very explicit cruelty and abuse.
