The story
Haunted by the memory of her deceased mother, Dana leaves Malibu behind and heads to South Africa to fulfill her mother's dream of surfing Jefferys Bay.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated daylight over open water, with the Eastern Cape coastline shot in wide, sun-bleached frames: long green point breaks, rocky headlands, and warm sand that gives way to dusty roadside towns. The camera stays mostly steady and sociable, following surfers through the surf with fast handheld bursts when the waves get big, and the ocean sound is loud and constant, broken by pop and driving guitar tracks. The vibe is breezy and sunny with a thread of grief running underneath, the kind of easygoing adventure that suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a beach-day watch, or a comfort rewatch on the couch. Pacing is brisk and episodic, built around training montages, rivalries and small reconciliations, and the emotional arc follows a young woman slowly loosening her hold on a lost parent while finding friendship in an unfamiliar place. Intensity is low: some wipeouts and rough water, with no real violence, sexual content, or gore. It suits viewers who want sun, surf and a gentle coming-of-age story, especially fans of surf films who like their drama light.
