The story
The story begins when high school student Kazuki Muto is killed one night saving a mysterious girl from a monster, only to wake up in his school dorm, believing it to have been a dream; however, he soon finds out that dream wasn't a dream at all when a giant serpentine monster attacks him and his sister. Tokiko Tsumura, the girl he saved, explains that the monster is a homunculus. Kazuki had been attacked and killed by it when he was rescuing her; however, she, feeling responsible for him, revived him by placing a Kakugane medallion in his chest, serving as a replacement heart.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated cel animation with glowing crimson and gold energy bursting during transformation sequences, and a steam-and-brass palette of early-twentieth-century Japanese streets and a gaudy dorm. The look is loud and kinetic: quick cuts, dramatic zooms, and fight scenes built around flashy light effects. Sound leans on bombastic battle cues, bright pop-rock openings, and exaggerated sound effects, with quieter comic beats between fights. The vibe is boisterous, earnest, and goofy, suited to a weekend binge or an energetic afternoon when you want something upbeat and unselfconscious. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with each week's monster introducing a new gadget-driven battle and a bit of character banter. The emotional register stays on friendship, loyalty, and a teenage boy learning what he's willing to fight for, with the cast's bonds carrying more weight than any single arc. Intensity is moderate to high: frequent fights with monstrous, gruesome creatures, bloody injuries and deaths handled in cartoon style, and recurring fan-service and suggestive comedy. It suits viewers who enjoy shonen action with a lot of spectacle and a sense of humor, and who are comfortable with a few crude or cheeky moments.
