- comedy
The story
An aspiring singer from southern Italy who's just been dumped moves north to Milan, where he falls in love and enters a TV singing competition show.
What it’s like
Bright, flat daylight and bustling city streets set the tone, with the warm yellows of southern Italian sun giving way to cooler, greyer Milan. This is a broad, good-natured Italian comedy, shot in a straightforward, unfussy style with lots of medium shots of its lead performing to the camera and reacting to the people around him. The soundtrack leans on cheerful pop-folk and bouncy Neapolitan-flavoured tunes, so it feels upbeat and sing-along rather than reflective. The mood is light, playful and easygoing, with a steady, brisk rhythm of gags and set-pieces. Its central figure is an earnest underdog gradually finding confidence and warmth in a new place, with the romance and the competition plot moving things along at an easy pace. Comedy is the register throughout: the humour is often broad, sometimes cheeky about regional stereotypes, and the stakes stay low. Violence is absent, with no gore or real menace. Sexual content is mild and mostly implied. The tone is light and gently satirical. It suits viewers who want a comfortable, laugh-out-loud night in, a relaxed weekend watch, or something cheerful with an Italian accent, especially fans of Italian comedy and easy, feel-good romcoms.
