The story
Jean-Pierre Savelli is a forty-something employee of an insurance company in Clermont-Ferrand who finds himself facing a mid-life crisis. When his fiancée Valérie decides to put their relationship on hold, he changes his holiday plans and heads for the Flots Bleus camping site near Arcachon. Jean-Pierre had been hoping for peace and calm. Instead he meets Patrick Chirac and his entourage of inveterate holidaymakers...
What it’s like
Bright, sun-bleached summer colour: sandy campsite grounds, pale caravans, pine-shaded paths, and the glare of the Atlantic coast in midday light, shot in a plain, broadly lit comedic style with little visual flourish. The sound is what you'd expect of a holiday comedy: bouncy French pop and accordion-tinged light music, clinking glasses, beach chatter, and the constant bustle of a crowded site. The mood is warm, goofy and easygoing, with a faint bittersweet edge under the slapstick, the feeling of a holiday that goes slightly wrong and then becomes a good time. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with scenes of rowdy sociability, drinking games and small indignities that build toward a looser, more affectionate finale. Its people are a stiff, buttoned-up man slowly unclenching among a loud, generous group who refuse to leave him alone. Expect plenty of boozy, sexual and crude humour, bumbling fights and pratfalls, but little real violence and nothing graphic; it is light rather than cruel. Suited to a lazy weekend afternoon, a summer evening with friends, or anyone wanting cheerful, rude-but-warm French comedy with no dread. For people who enjoy broad ensemble farce and a feel-good send-off.
