The story

A remaster of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night included in the "Castlevania Requiem" collection. Experience Symphony of the Night remastered to 4K/1080p, with optional rendering options such as image-smoothing. This remaster is based on Symphony of the Night's expanded re-release for Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles. Featuring ground-breaking non-linear gameplay, Symphony of the Night helped define a new genre of gameplay by blending RPG elements, exploration and platforming. The vast number of weapons and items found throughout the game allows a diverse range of play styles to be employed. This game perfected the essence of the Castlevania series with gorgeous artwork and classic soundtrack that carry the player through the game.

What it’s like

Dense hand-drawn sprites on a deep, shadowed castle palette, with a remastered 4K/1080p presentation that can be softened by optional image smoothing so the pixel art keeps a painterly, gently blurred edge. The castle itself is a layered maze of candlelit halls, marble corridors, cavernous catacombs and inverted clock-tower rooms, lit by warm torchlight against cold stone and bursts of gothic red. The score, a classic Castlevania soundtrack of gliding organ, bright synth-rock and brooding piano, fills the rooms with melancholy grandeur. Movement is fluid and exploratory: an open-ended, backtracking wander through interconnected rooms where new abilities and gear slowly open old ground, with pacing that alternates unhurried roaming and sudden, punchy combat. Its tone is atmospheric gothic melancholy with a hint of wry, almost playful ceremony, and the emotional arc follows a lone protagonist steadily growing into his power. Intensity is moderate: stylised, cartoonish violence against monsters and skeletal foes, with some grisly creature design but no gore-heavy realism, and little that is frightening beyond occasional jump-scare imagery. It suits late-night solo sessions, long comfort replays, and players who love collecting, exploring and building a character over time.
