The story

Castlevania Advance Collection includes three legendary Castlevania games that were first released in the early 2000s: Circle of the Moon, Aria of Sorrow, and Harmony of Dissonance. In addition, this collection also includes Castlevania: Dracula X and some never-before-seen sketches and artwork from the games! All four games are enhanced with newly added modern features such as Rewind, Save/Load, and Replay, making this the best way possible to experience these classics or discover them for the first time! This collection also boasts a handy Encyclopedia, a Music Player with all soundtracks; and you can even change the ROM Region to play all games in different versions.

What it’s like

Dark gothic pixel art on the Game Boy Advance's small, sharp screen: moonlit stone corridors, candle-lit halls, rust-brown castle interiors, and the glowing reds and sickly greens of demonic bosses, all rendered in crisp sprite work with a faint CRT-like softness when you want it. The music is the centrepiece, a catalogue of chiptune-leaning orchestral themes that swell in organ-like tones and drop into eerie, sparse passages in the quieter rooms. The vibe is brooding but nostalgic, a kind of cool, shadowy melancholy that rewards long, unhurried sessions on a late night or a slow weekend. Pacing is deliberate and exploratory: sprawling interconnected maps, backtracking, and stat-building in the RPG-leaning entries, with the Rewind and Save/Load options easing the frustration of tough jumps. Emotional register stays wistful and atmospheric rather than frightening, with a gradual arc of a lone hunter growing stronger and piecing together a sprawling mystery. Intensity sits in the moderate range: stylised combat against skeletons, bats and monsters, some blood-red sprite effects, and bosses that are challenging but never graphic or gory. Fear comes from atmosphere and dread rather than shocks. Best suited to players who love metroidvania exploration, classic action-platforming, and quietly eerie gothic worlds.
