The story

In Lincoln City, some inhabitants have extraordinary abilities. Most live below the poverty line, under the close surveillance of a heavily militarized police force. Connor, a construction worker with powers, involves with a criminal gang to help his ailing mother. (Based on the short film “Code 8,” 2016.)

What it’s like

Gritty, low-key and sun-bleached in the way of a cheap Canadian city in summer: washed-out daylight, flat grey concrete, sodium-orange interiors and the sick green glow of gang hideouts after dark. The camera is mostly handheld and close, jostling through apartment corridors and job sites, then cutting to hard, clean drone shots of patrolling police robots that feel cold by contrast. The sound design leans on a thudding electronic pulse, sirens, and the hum of surveillance tech, with quiet stretches where a hospital-room silence hangs heavy. Its vibe is bleak, tense and quietly sad, a working-class dystopia with a crime-thriller edge. It suits a late-night watch when you want something grim and urban rather than cozy. Pacing is brisk, with action and drug-deal tension in short, sharp bursts; the emotional core is a dutiful son stretched thin by his mother's illness and the choices that follow. Violence is frequent and moderately bloody, with gunfights, fistfights and superpowered brawls, and there is some drug content and threat, but no sexual content. It is for viewers who enjoy superhero stories filtered through gritty crime and social-realist unease.
