The story
Engage in the ultimate battle of wits and wills with the most ruthless military force in history. Set in the backdrop of WWII, Commandos is a real-time tactical wargame that puts you in command of a squad of elite Allied Commandos whose job is to complete 24 dangerous missions behind enemy lines. Your goal is to thwart the German war effort by means of sabotage and tactical genius. This action-packed strategy war game is set apart by its revolutionary AI, and the ability to control 6 individual commandos, each with a specific skill, as they infiltrate hostile territories and engage in intense combat. Your perilous missions will take you from the parched desert of North Africa to banks of the Rhine, the mountainous fjords of Norway, and the beaches of Normandy.Experience the most realistic, visually stunning graphics with accurate 3D models of more than 350 structures, vehicles, and weapons from the WWII era.
What it’s like
Top-down isometric dioramas of WWII terrain, painted and crisp at a distance, with the camera pulled back so whole village blocks, desert wadis and snowy Norwegian passes sit readable on screen at once. Sun-bleached sand, grey Rhine mud, blue-white fjord snow and dim interiors lit by lanterns and muzzle flashes give each mission its own palette, and vehicles, bridges and sentry posts are modelled in fine mechanical detail. The soundscape is period-flavoured: rifle cracks and distant machine-gun chatter, engines revving over gravel, a clipped military score that swells when a patrol turns the corner. The feel is methodical and tense rather than frantic. Pausing to plan routes, timing a guard's patrol, and swapping between six specialists (sniper, driver, saboteur, diver and others) gives a slow, deliberate rhythm punctuated by sudden firefights. Violence is frequent and rendered as small, bloodless figures falling, with a constant threat of being spotted and the bleak tone of wartime sabotage; there is no gore. It suits a focused evening of puzzle-like planning, and fits players who enjoy tactical stealth, careful problem-solving, and sustained tension over fast action.
