The story

Dark Age of Camelot is a 3D medieval fantasy MMORPG that combines Arthurian lore, Norse mythology and Irish Celtic legends with a dash of high fantasy. It is set in the period after King Arthur's death and his kingdom has split into three parts which are in a constant state of war with each other. DAoC includes both PvE and RvR combat, players can choose to adventure alone or join groups to get completion of credit in large-scale PvE encounters and for communication purposes in RvR.

What it’s like

Dark Age of Camelot runs on a 2001-era 3D engine, so its world reads as chunky low-poly and painterly rather than sharp: broad, flat-coloured forests, mossy stone ruins, and skies that shift through a real day and night cycle, with dusk turning the land amber and moonlit nights thick with blue shadow. Character creation and colour customisation give every player a distinct silhouette, and the sound leans on ambient wind, distant war horns, and a folk-tinged orchestral score that swells when battles break out across the realms. Pacing is slow and deliberate, built on grinding, questing and crafting, punctuated by sudden, chaotic realm-versus-realm skirmishes with archery volleys and explosions. Its tone is earnest and communal, with a mournful, post-Arthurian sense of a fractured kingdom and a warm, unhurried camaraderie between guildmates who chat over a campfire between fights. Violence is cartoonish fantasy combat with melee, spells and archery, with no gore to speak of, though PvP can be tense and competitive. It suits long evening sessions, weekend play with friends, and a comfort return to an old world. It is for players who want a persistent, social fantasy realm where time spent with others matters more than any single quest.
