The story

King Arthur: Knights Tale mixes an XCOM-style turn-based battle system with traditional RPG mechanics, including character development, choices that impact the direction of your campaign, and upgrading your home base of Camelot. The story follows Sir Mordred, who travels with a band of knights across Avalon in search of King Arthur. This is already an interesting twist on the classic legend, as Sir Mordred is King Arthur's nemesis, traditionally shown as the king's traitorous nephew. In this version of the tale, Mordred has actually mortally wounded Arthur, and is now stalking him through the isle of Avalon to finish the job on command of The Lady of the Lake.

What it’s like

Muted, storybook-dark fantasy, with misty Avalon landscapes, stone halls, and firelit camps that feel heavy with damp and dusk. The overall mood is melancholy and grim rather than bright, and the soundtrack leans on low orchestral swells and ambient wind over the clash of steel. Battles play out as deliberate, grid-based turns where each move carries weight, so the pace shifts between tense tactical puzzles and quieter stretches of walking, talking, and tending a home base. Between fights, the camp and the slowly upgraded hall of Camelot give a settled, cozy pull that contrasts with the bleakness of the road. Violence is regular and stylised: sword and arrow combat with some blood, but no sustained gore or sexual content, and the danger comes more from attrition and bad decisions than from shock. Its people are morally compromised and worn down, and the emotional arc follows a band of knights whose loyalties are tested by the choices they make together. It suits a rainy evening with a controller, a long session of tactics and light management, or anyone who enjoys turn-based strategy with a brooding, mythic atmosphere and a steady sense of consequence.
