The story

From the creative minds of the Persona series – Metaphor: ReFantazio marks ATLUS’ first ever, full-scale fantasy RPG, brought to you by director Katsura Hashino, character designer Shigenori Soejima, and composer Shoji Meguro. Write your destiny and rise above fear as you step into a fantasy world unlike anything you’ve seen before. Fraught with unsettling mystery, the kingdom stands on a precipice. Now, you must embark on a journey, overcoming obstacles and forging bonds with friends.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated fantasy with a gleaming Art Nouveau sheen: ornate gold-trimmed interiors, painterly skies that slide from dawn pinks to bruised dusk, and character portraits drawn in bold, stylized ink and flat color that snap against richly textured backdrops. Menus and battle screens feel like illuminated pages, and the sound is a sweeping orchestral-and-jazz score that swells in grand kingdom vistas and turns sly and syncopated in town streets, with quieter piano passages giving the bigger moments room to breathe. The vibe is grand but wistful, with a steady undercurrent of unease as a kingdom wobbles toward crisis. Its pacing is unhurried: long stretches of walking, talking, and shopping in bustling towns give way to turn-based battles where the combat asks you to think ahead, and real-time segments keep the hands busy. Emotionally it leans earnest and hopeful, following a young protagonist and a loyal band of companions as their trust in one another deepens, with the stakes rising into darker territory. Violence is stylized and fairly frequent in combat, with some tense, frightening scenes and occasional grim moments, but nothing graphic or gory. It suits long evenings, soaking in a world, and players who want a big, character-driven fantasy adventure with polished presentation and a strong sense of ceremony.
