The story
Sea of Stars is a turn-based RPG inspired by the classics. Promising the Sabotage touch in every system, Sea of Stars aims to modernize the classic RPG in terms of turn-based combat, storytelling, exploration and interactions with the environment, while still offering a hearty slice of nostalgia and good old, simple fun.
What it’s like
Chunky pixel art with bright, saturated palettes: sun-drenched islands, moonlit ruins, glowing cave crystals and painterly sunsets that fill the screen when the party sets out. The overworld drifts between sleepy coastal towns and sprawling dungeons, and the whole thing carries a warm, wistful classic-JRPG glow. Its score is a lush orchestral-synth blend that swells into big, hopeful themes and drops to quiet, lonely pads during dungeon crawls. Combat is turn-based with readable telegraphed attacks, sparkling spell effects and a rhythm-based timing layer that keeps fingers busy without demanding reflexes. Pacing is unhurried, with frequent side quests, cooking, and small village detours; the emotional register is nostalgic, earnest and tender, following two young friends who train as sunblade-wielding heroes and grow into their responsibilities. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, with monsters fading in puffs of light, and there is some peril and mild scares but no gore or sexual content. Suited to a long Sunday afternoon, a comfort replay, or anyone who loves classic 16-bit adventures with a modern polish.
