The story

Had she found her identity or her destiny? Rebel had been fortunate to be adopted-by the James family. The Australian clan fully supported her search for her mother's roots--even though it took her to England. But when Rebel arrived at Davenport Hall, the English manor where her mother had stayed as a five-year-old war orphan, she was surprised to discover the earl actually seemed to be expecting her. Hugh Davenport was not what Rebel had imagined--he was far too handsome and sexy. And Rebel, Hugh discovered, was not the new nanny after all. But none of that mattered. Rebel knew Hugh and his fiery little niece needed her. She'd stay because she had already opened her heart--she needed them too!

What it’s like

Soft, unhurried prose with the easy warmth of a Harlequin-era romance: a country house on English estate land, rain-washed green lawns and wood-panelled rooms glimpsed through the story's gaze, with the long-ago shadow of a wartime childhood lingering at its edges. The mood is sunny and tender, a comfortable afternoon read with a cup of tea going cold beside you. Pacing is brisk and chapter-driven, each scene tipping into the next with flirtatious tension between two guarded adults and a spirited child who draws them together. The emotional register is hopeful and romantic, with the arc of a young woman who arrives uncertain of her place and slowly finds she belongs, both to a household and to a man. There is no violence, no gore, and no explicit sexual content; the heat is in glances, banter and the slow warming of a relationship. It suits a rainy Sunday, a comfort reread, or anyone wanting a gentle, low-stakes romance with a touch of old-world nobility. Written for readers who love an English manor setting, a grumpy-but-kind hero and a happy ending.
