The story
GABRIEL He woke deep within the ground, and the first sensation he felt was hunger. An overwhelming hunger for blood that demanded satisfaction. But as he hunted the dark streets of Paris for prey, a voice called to him, soothing, calming, giving him the strength to control his craving. Francesca Del Ponce was a healer, a woman who radiated goodness as powerfully as the sun did light. But surely his obsession with her would turn him as his twin brother had turned, leaving the world with two monsters instead of one. Though he knew she would be like hot silk in his arms, though he knew the taste of her would be addictive, he feared for her life and his soul if he took her. Then with one mind-shattering vow she gave herself -- "I offer freely, without reservation, I offer my life for yours as is my right" --and with a firestorm of long-forgotten feelings, he glimpsed salvation.
What it’s like
Lush, heated and melodramatic, with night-drenched Paris streets, candlelit rooms and the chill of underground places, all rendered in close third person with a steady pull of longing. The prose is ornate and emotionally overt, full of breathless interior sensation, heat, scent and the tang of blood, and the mood runs from brooding dread to swooning tenderness. Pacing is driven by desire and the slow, deliberate fight against hunger rather than by quick twists. A tormented, reluctant immortal slowly learns to trust a gentle healer who gives herself without reserve, and the arc is about restraint giving way to surrender. Sexual content is frequent and fairly explicit, written as a central part of the story. Violence is present but not gory: feeding, skirmishes with other vampires and a sense of menace, with dread more than graphic horror. It suits a late-night or rainy-afternoon escape, and readers who want dark, sensual paranormal romance with a strong emotional throughline and a heroine who is a healer at its core.
