The story

A well-to-do husband who allows his wife to have affairs in order to avoid a divorce becomes a prime suspect in the disappearance of her lovers.

What it’s like

Cool, sun-bleached suburban Louisiana gives way to a glossy, claustrophobic unease in this 2022 thriller, shot with the polished sheen of a studio drama: warm interiors lit by lamps and pool glare, lingering wide frames of manicured lawns and still water, and tight, sweaty close-ups when tempers flare. Adrian Lyne's style leans on slow dolly moves, sensual pacing, and a restless, sultry score that keeps tension simmering under ordinary domestic routines. Sexual content is frequent and explicit in places, with nudity and simmering eroticism; violence is sporadic but sharp when it comes, with a few brutal, abrupt moments and a murder-mystery undercurrent rather than gore. Jealousy, humiliation, and cruelty run through the marriage, and the emotional register is cold and mean more than cathartic. Tonally it suits a late night alone with a drink, or anyone who wants an erotic thriller with a dark, adult edge. It is not gentle, and it is not for viewers who want a light or reassuring watch.
