The story

Gru and Lucy and their girls—Margo, Edith and Agnes—welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. Gru also faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina, forcing the family to go on the run.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated 3D animation with glossy surfaces and cartoon-cheerful color: sunny suburban yards, the warm amber glow of a cramped lair, sleek neon-tinted lounges and bold, slightly cartoonish sunsets. Camera moves are energetic but tidy, with quick cuts, playful slapstick staging and the occasional wide sweep across a city or desert. The soundtrack leans on bouncy pop, orchestral swells and comic musical gags, with the Minions' gibberish filling the gaps. Overall vibe is light, goofy and warm, a bright weekend-afternoon watch or easy family movie night. Pacing is brisk, with frequent gags and small chase set pieces rather than long quiet stretches. Tone stays calm and low-stakes: the emotional arc follows a gruff dad learning to be a father to a mischievous new son and a family learning to stick together under pressure. Action is cartoonish, with chases, explosions and fights played for laughs; there is no gore, no sexual content, and peril stays mild, though a few moments of threat or loud noise may startle very young children. Made for families with kids, and for adults who enjoy gentle, self-aware animated comedy with plenty of visual slapstick.
