The story

Byomkesh, fresh out of college, agrees to investigate the disappearance of Bhuvan, a chemist. Assisted by Bhuvan's son Ajit, Byomkesh links the case to a larger conspiracy that will unsettle Calcutta.

What it’s like

Hot, dusty 1930s Calcutta rendered in grimy sepia and ochre, with tram bells, crowded lanes and smoke-thick back rooms giving the city a restless, claustrophobic texture. Dibakar Banerjee shoots with a mix of stylised compositions, quick handheld moves and sudden stillness, so that a sly glance or a locked door can carry as much weight as a chase. The score leans on jagged strings and hard percussion that cut out abruptly, leaving pockets of near silence. Its vibe is brainy, slippery and mildly paranoid, the kind of noir-tinged puzzle that suits a late evening with the lights low and full attention. Pacing is brisk and talky, built on questioning, overheard half-truths and a steady accumulation of clues rather than action set-pieces. The emotional register stays dry and wry, following a young, earnest detective who grows warier and more cynical as the city's secrets surface, with a mentorship between him and the boy at his side gradually deepening. Violence is sudden and sharp but infrequent, including a few brief, shocking killings and some tense, bloody moments, with no sustained gore and little sexual content. It suits viewers who enjoy period crime thrillers, layered conspiracies and Indian cinema that plays with genre conventions.
