The story
Vidya Sinha has only one obsession in life. She wants to see her teenage daughter Mini, who is paralysed waist-downwards, walk again. But, is this scenario as obvious as it seems? Or is Vidya an impersonator of Durga Rani Singh from Kalimpong, who is wanted for kidnapping and murder?
What it’s like
Saturated festival colour and crowded, sweltering lanes give this a restless, humid edge, with the glow of Durga Puja pandals spilling over wet streets and hospital corridors lit in cold fluorescent white. Sujoy Ghosh frames Kolkata as a maze of people and half-glimpsed faces, so the camera often feels like it is searching a crowd. The score pulses with dhol drums and tense strings and drops into sudden silences that make a corridor feel longer than it is. Its mood is sultry unease that tightens into dread, with a stubborn, methodical heroine who moves through the city by asking the right questions. The pace is brisk and investigative, building through interviews, records and small contradictions rather than chase scenes. Intensity is moderate to high: child abuse and kidnapping are central themes, there is an attempted murder, and the violence, though not gory, is sharp and sudden. Dread outweighs gore throughout. It suits a late night alone with the lights off, or anyone who wants a grounded, twisty mystery with an emotionally weighty core and no comfort-watch softness. It is for viewers who enjoy suspense that relies on character and place.
