The story
10 years after Dexter went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, we find him living under an assumed name in the small town of Iron Lake, New York. Dexter may be embracing his new life, but in the wake of unexpected events in this close-knit community, his Dark Passenger beckons.
What it’s like
Cold, muted daylight and snow-heavy winter exteriors give this limited series a hushed, wintry look, with log cabins, pine woods, and small-town interiors lit by warm lamps against the grey. Compositions are often still and slightly isolated, with long quiet takes of a man alone in a cabin or a diner, and the palette shifts from the cool blues of the lake country to the sodium glow of a police station. The score leans on low, sustained tones and sparse piano, with silence doing much of the work between scenes. The mood is quiet unease: a settled, watchful melancholy with a steady undercurrent of dread that rises in bursts. Pacing is deliberate, building through domestic routines and small-town gossip before tightening into suspense. Violence is present and sometimes sudden, including murders shown on screen, though it is handled with restraint rather than gore; expect tension and some graphic moments, not relentless brutality. It suits a cold-weather evening with a watchful, slow-burn appetite for crime drama, especially for viewers drawn to a lonely protagonist wrestling with his old urges and the people who begin to see through him.
