The story
Thirty years ago, aliens arrive on Earth. Not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the aliens' welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9.
What it’s like
Gritty, handheld, and documentary-raw: shaky mockumentary footage intercut with news clips, surveillance feeds and grainy hand-held camera work that lingers on dusty roads, corrugated shanties and corporate office glass under a flat, bleached Johannesburg sun. Palette runs to ochre, rust and washed-out grey, with sudden bursts of acid green and sparking blue when the alien technology flares, and the sound design mixes distant crowd noise, chattering insect-like alien vocalisations and a pulsing, industrial electronic score. Vibe: sun-baked unease with a sardonic edge, best for a late evening watch when you want something with bite and momentum. Pacing is brisk and relentless, the first act playful and the second turning sharply into chase and survival. Tone shifts from satirical bureaucratic absurdity to bleak, angry sympathy, following a smug functionary whose body betrays him and whose arc is a grim, reluctant reckoning with what he has been complicit in. Intensity is high: frequent gunfire, explosions, bloody injuries, and graphic body horror as his transformation progresses, with some crude language and brutal, dehumanising treatment of the aliens. Not gentle. For viewers who like socially pointed sci-fi, rough-edged genre filmmaking, and stories that use spectacle to skewer apartheid-era politics and corporate greed.
