The story

No matter how hard he pleads and begs, the pigeon is not supposed to drive the bus while the driver is away, but pigeon tries every persuasive trick a young child knows to get you to say "Yes."

What it’s like

Bold cartoon pigeon on a blank cream page, flat primary colours and thick black outlines, with the text set in big friendly type that sits right on the picture, so every spread reads like a stage with one performer. The voice is pure pleading exasperation, the kind a small child uses at bedtime, rendered in capital letters and exclamation marks, and reading it aloud is most of the fun. The book is fast and bouncy, one spread after another of escalating wheedling, closing with a quick comic turn. Its feeling is warm, silly and slightly mischievous, a lap-sized giggle fit for a bedtime read or a rainy afternoon with a toddler. Nothing frightening or harsh happens; the only stakes are a bird who really, really wants the wheel. Good for parents reading to preschoolers, for early readers tackling repetitive, playful text, and for anyone who wants a gentle, funny Spanish-language picture book that rewards being read aloud in a silly voice.
