The story

Lahela 'Doogie' Kamealoha, a 16-year-old prodigy juggles a budding medical career and life as a teenager. With the support of her caring and comical 'ohana (family) and friends, Lahela is determined to make the most of her teenage years and forge her own path.

What it’s like

Warm, sunlit Honolulu rendered in bright, saturated daylight: sun-washed streets, banana-leaf greens, the blue of the Pacific seen through hospital windows and the open doors of a crowded family home. The camera stays close and mobile in a multi-camera-style comedy rhythm, with bright, even lighting and brisk cuts between family kitchen banter and the orderly, fluorescent-clean corridors of a teaching hospital. The score is light and ukulele-tinged, with sitcom stingers for punchlines. Pacing is quick and episodic, with each half-hour resolving its problem by the end credits. Tone is buoyant, sweet, and affectionate, a cozy comedy-drama about a gifted sixteen-year-old balancing ambitious medical work with school crushes, sibling squabbles and a loud, loving extended family. Her arc is a young woman learning to claim her own path while leaning on the people around her. Intensity is very low: medical emergencies are handled off-screen or with mild peril, no gore, occasional mild teen romance and crude family jokes. Suited to family viewing, a light weeknight watch, or anyone wanting gentle, funny comfort with a strong sense of place.
