The story
Doraemon is an anime TV series created by Fujiko F. Fujio and based on the manga series of the same name. This anime is the much more successful successor of the 1973 anime.
What it’s like
Bright, flat cel animation with saturated primary colours, clean outlines and simple backgrounds that sit in sunny suburban streets, schoolrooms and a cluttered bedroom crammed with gadgets. The look is cheerful and unfussy, with a pastel-leaning warmth and little shading, and the score is light and bouncy with bubbly theme-song energy and gentle chiming for the gadgets. The vibe is sunny, playful and comfortingly low-stakes, the kind of thing to put on for a lazy afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or as background while doing chores. Episodes unfold in self-contained bursts: a lazy schoolboy pulls a futuristic tool from a magic pocket, things go mildly wrong, and everything resolves with a laugh and a lesson about friendship and honesty. The emotional register stays warm and light, with a steady undercurrent of affection between the boy, his friends and his robot cat. Intensity is very low: slapstick mishaps, scolding, some crying, and no real violence, gore, or frightening content. It suits young children, families watching together, and adults who want something gentle, nostalgic and easy to sit with.
