The story

Duma Key is a novel by American writer Stephen King published on January 22, 2008 by Scribner. The book reached No. 1 on the New York Times Best Seller List. It is King's first novel to be set in Florida and/or Minnesota.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached and slow, with Gulf light doing much of the work: the sky turns to hammered copper at dusk, the water lies flat and glassy, and Florida heat sits heavy on every page. King's voice is conversational and digressive, lingering over small domestic routines, sketches, and long drives before tipping into the uncanny. The mood is melancholy with a creeping unease rather than jump-scare dread, like a storm building far out at sea. It suits a long weekend read by a pool or a rainy evening with a lamp on, when there's time to settle into its unhurried pace. The emotional core is a man rebuilding himself after a devastating injury, and his slow, tender recovery carries much of the weight. Intensity runs moderate to high: a graphic early accident with vivid descriptions of injury, several brutal violent scenes, a menacing presence, and some sexual content. Not gentle. It's for readers who want atmosphere, character-driven horror, and the sensation of a sun-drenched place going quietly wrong.
