The story

Author Ben Mears returns to ‘Salem's Lot to write a book about a house that has haunted him since childhood only to find his isolated hometown infested with vampires. While the vampires claim more victims, Mears convinces a small group of believers to combat the undead. What it’s like

Slow-burning small-town dread in sun-faded, dusty Maine, the kind of unease that gathers in ordinary places: a church steeple against a late-summer sky, a boarding house with its curtains drawn, shadowed kitchens and empty main streets at dusk. King's prose is conversational and unhurried, shifting between many townspeople's perspectives and bringing in the rhythms of daily life, gossip, and small-town routine before the creeping wrongness takes hold. The mood is melancholy and creeping rather than jumpy, with long stretches of quiet building to sudden, grim set pieces. Violence and gore are present and sometimes graphic, with frightening vampire attacks and some cruelty toward children and the vulnerable, though it is more dread than constant bloodshed. Sexual content is minimal. It suits a late-night read alone with the lights low, or a slow autumn weekend, and fits readers who love atmospheric, character-heavy horror with a nostalgic, Depression-era-shadowed sense of place and a community slowly confronting something monstrous.
