The story

One man escapes from a biological weapon facility after an accident, carrying with him the deadly virus known as Captain Tripps, a rapidly mutating flu that - in the ensuing weeks - wipes out most of the world's population. In the aftermath, survivors choose between following an elderly black woman to Boulder or the dark man, Randall Flagg, who has set up his command post in Las Vegas. The two factions prepare for a confrontation between the forces of good and evil. ([source][1]) [1]: https://stephenking.com/library/novel/stand_the.html

What it’s like

Sprawling and unhurried, written in a plainspoken American voice that lingers on diners, gas stations, radio static and the small domestic details of ordinary people, so the pages feel dusty, sun-bleached and road-worn. The mood shifts between eerie quiet and sudden dread: long stretches of emptied towns, abandoned cars and silent highways give way to tense, claustrophobic scenes in sickrooms and stalled cities. Violence is present and occasionally graphic, with sickness described in unflinching physical detail and some deaths and brutal confrontations, while sexual content is limited and frank rather than explicit. Its pace is deliberately slow to build, with the reader sitting for chapters in the lives of drifting, grieving survivors before the story's larger, almost mythic conflict takes hold. The register is gothic and apocalyptic, with a cozy-in-a-strange-way comfort in its small-town rhythms and a steady undercurrent of unease. It suits a long, committed read on a rainy weekend or a late-night stretch alone, and is for readers who enjoy immersive, character-heavy epics and don't mind a heavy, sustained dose of dread.
