What it’s like

This omnibus gathers four early Stephen King novels and story collections, and its prose is the pleasure: a conversational, colloquial voice that moves easily between small-town gossip, radio-and-television mundanity and sudden jolts of dread. The sensory world is built from ordinary American textures, linoleum kitchens, vinyl-seated school buses, drive-ins, humid Maine summers and snowbound hotel corridors, so the horror arrives in familiar rooms, which makes it feel close. The mood runs from nostalgic unease to slow-burning menace, with a steady, chatty rhythm that rewards reading in long unhurried stretches, though the pacing tightens sharply in the final pages of each piece. Intensity is considerable: there is grisly violence, bodily horror, cruelty toward children, and frightening supernatural scenes, with a few sexual references that are not explicit. Best suited to a late-night reader who wants a cosy-but-creepy comfort read, or to fans of small-town gothic who don't mind their chills coming with real brutality.
