The story
Unrelated to the popular SNES RPG, Earthbound is an adventure game developed by Xtalsoft in 1983.
What it’s like
Sparse and solitary, built around a blinking cursor, short typed lines of description, and the slow stillness of an early-1980s home computer screen. The look is that of a monochrome or limited-palette text display, with any imagery kept to the bare minimum the hardware allowed, so the atmosphere comes from the words and from what the player imagines behind them. Sound is minimal, a few electronic blips at most, leaving long quiet stretches. The vibe is quiet unease with a slight fairy-tale strangeness: a lone traveller who has lost their past, piecing things together through a sequence of unhurried choices. It suits a late evening with the lights low, a patient afternoon when there is no need to be anywhere, or a curious exploration of retro Japanese computing history. Pacing is deliberate, driven by reading, guessing and backtracking rather than reflexes. Its emotional register is wistful and mysterious, centred on the gradual recovery of identity. There is no gore or graphic violence; the tension comes from uncertainty and the slow dawning of what has happened. It is for players who enjoy text adventures, puzzles that reward careful attention, and the atmosphere of early home computing.
