The story

What it’s like

Warm, humid and faintly mocking, with the heat of a Caribbean river port carried in long, looping sentences that wander into digressions and return with a wink. The prose moves at the pace of an old storyteller leaning on a balcony rail, drifting between tender melancholy and sly comic asides, so a lament can sit beside a bit of gossip about a parrot. Sensory detail is dense but never showy: river mud and medicine smells, sweat on dark wood, the creak of ceiling fans, rain drumming on tin roofs, cut flowers in a shuttered parlour. Sexual content is frank but handled with wit rather than explicit detail. There are a few deaths and an outbreak of illness aboard a ship, but no gore and little real violence. The emotional register is bittersweet and patient, following a single unrequited devotion across decades while everyone visibly ages. Best read slowly, a chapter at a time, on a lazy afternoon or a rainy day in a hammock, for readers who love a generous, playful voice, ornate sentences, and love stories that take their time and refuse to be simple.
