The story

A modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD's most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare - a sober companion, Dr. Watson.

What it’s like

Bright, clean Manhattan interiors and glossy city exteriors give Elementary a polished network-drama look: sunlit brownstone parlors, cool glass-and-steel offices, and night streets washed in sodium-orange streetlight. The camera favors medium two-shots and over-the-shoulder compositions in the apartment and precinct, with crime scenes lit by flat fluorescents or the cold blue of a laptop screen, and the occasional quick montage of clues sliding across a tabletop. The score is restrained, mostly low strings and soft electronic pulses under dialogue, leaving room for the brisk patter between its two leads. The vibe is brisk, witty and comfortably procedural, with an undercurrent of addiction-recovery wariness that never tips into darkness. Episodes move at a steady clip, each case resolved within an hour, while the characters' arcs unfold slowly: a prickly, isolated genius learning to trust a partner who refuses to be pushed aside. Violence is present but mostly off-screen or brief, with murders shown through corpses and forensic detail rather than gore, and occasional tense confrontations. Sexual content is minimal. It suits a weeknight unwind, background puzzle-solving while cooking, or a comfort rewatch for viewers who enjoy clever mysteries, character chemistry and a gentle, familiar city backdrop.
