The story
A comedy that follows a group of friends as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood.
What it’s like
Warm, sun-faded 1980s Texas light: the daytime heat of a college campus in late August, dusty baseball-diamond gold, and the slow amber haze of backyard parties after dark. Richard Linklater's camera drifts with loose, unhurried handheld movement and long unbroken takes that let conversations wander into jokes, debates and stalled silences. The soundtrack is pure period pleasure, a stack of late-'70s and early-'80s rock, disco and new wave that hums under every drive and dorm scene. The vibe is easygoing, nostalgic and mildly rowdy, the kind of film that suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a long-haul flight or a comfort rewatch with friends. Pacing is loose and episodic, more hangout than plot, with a light, looping rhythm. Its people are a band of cocky, goofy young men slowly learning that bravado and brotherhood are not the same thing, and the emotional register stays warm and self-deprecating. Intensity is low: there is plenty of drinking, crude talk, pranks and some sexual innuendo, but no real violence or gore, and the cruelty is mostly ribbing. For viewers who want an affectionate, funny, low-stakes portrait of male friendship and the last loose days before adulthood.
