The story
Lead epic battles in a new FINAL FANTASY world. Betrayal and darker dealings await in Squaresoft's game of war. Fight hundreds of battles across dangerous 3D terrain as an ancient blood feud awakens a deadlier foe.
What it’s like
Warm, dusty fantasy with a storybook gloss: sprite-based units stand on isometric 2.5D battlefields of cracked stone, scrubland, frozen tundra and dim cathedral interiors, rendered in painterly pre-rendered backdrops that feel like illuminated manuscripts brought to life. The palette leans on ochre, slate and deep crimson, with soft-focus cutscene portraits and anime-styled character art over the top. The score is orchestral and wistful, full of sweeping brass swells that drop away to quiet strings during intrigue scenes, and the battle music pulses with a steady urgency. The vibe is melancholic and political, a courtly war story where loyalty curdles and history keeps resurfacing. Pacing is deliberate and methodical: long stretches of positioning, grinding for levels, and careful turn-by-turn planning, punctuated by sudden reversals in the story. Characters move from idealism toward compromise, with friendships strained by betrayal. Violence is stylised and bloodless in look, with units falling and undead creatures rising, plus frequent death and permadeath stakes, though nothing is graphic. It suits a rainy weekend or a long, absorbing evening for people who want tactical depth, slow-burn political drama and a melancholic fantasy tone.
