The story

Charley Brewster, a high school student, accidentally discovers the true and creepy nature of Jerry Dandrige, his dashing and enigmatic new neighbor; but no one seems willing to believe him.

What it’s like

Warm suburban evenings glowing with sodium streetlight and the blue flicker of television, then sudden bursts of stage-lit red and rubbery practical gore, all shot in a bright, straightforward 1980s style with plenty of fog and nighttime shadow around the older houses. The score is synth-driven and bouncy, with stingers that jump on cue, and the sound design leans on creaking doors, thunder and wind in the trees. The vibe is goofy, playful horror: a Halloween-season fun-scare with a wink, part teen comedy and part creature feature. The pacing is brisk and the tone stays mostly light, with the central tension driven by a teenager nobody believes and an adult who is rapidly charming his way into everyone's good graces. Its people are a teenage boy slowly realizing he must act alone, a girlfriend caught between skepticism and fear, and a mother trying to keep her family's ordinary life intact. Violence is frequent and cartoonishly bloody, with some sexual innuendo and a few tense, frightening moments that land more as thrills than dread. It suits a Halloween night, a group watch, or a comfort rewatch for fans who enjoy campy vampire mayhem rather than quiet, serious horror.
