The story

Frog and Toad Together is an American fantasy adventure children's picture book, written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel and published by Harper & Row in 1972. It is the second book in the Frog and Toad series. Like each of the other four books in the series, it contains five easy-to-read short stories. It was a Newbery Honor Book, or runner-up for the American Library Association Newbery Medal, which recognizes the year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children". ---------- Also contained in: [Adventures of Frog and Toad](https://openlibrary.org/works/OL15428561W) [The Frog and Toad Treasury](https://openlibrary.org/works/OL1973505W)

What it’s like

Soft, spare line drawings of two green-tinted amphibians in a pared-down world of rounded hills, bare trees and plain page space, with the lightest possible colour washes keeping everything calm and uncluttered. The prose is short, plain and repetitive in the best way, full of gentle deadpan dialogue and small domestic rituals (a cookie left on the windowsill, a letter that will not be sent, a wait for spring) that read aloud with easy, unhurried rhythm. The vibe is warm, wry and quietly tender, the kind of book that suits a slow Sunday morning, a bedtime read-aloud, or a comfort re-read with a mug of something hot. Its five separate stories move at a relaxed, episodic pace, each ending on a small, satisfying beat rather than a climax. The emotional register is affectionate and low-stakes; the friends are steadfast with each other and the feelings are gently funny rather than heavy. Fear and mild worry surface briefly and are soothed. There is no violence, no gore and no sexual content, and the only sharp moments are small comic frustrations. It is for early readers, parents and grandparents, and anyone who wants gentleness, friendship and a little dry humour in very few words.
