The story

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, 16-year-old high school student Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out… into a tent! Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Soma clan, and it isn't long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Somas have a secret of their own—when hugged by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac!

What it’s like

Bright, clean cel animation in soft pastels: sunlit school hallways, warm wooden interiors, cherry blossoms drifting past open windows, and rain rendered as gentle streaks on glass. The palette shifts with the mood, from sunny daytime comedy to cooler blues and greys in quieter, more reflective scenes, and the piano-led score stays unhurried and tender. The pacing is episodic and relaxed, with long stretches of ordinary domestic life, small comic beats, and slow, earned moments of connection. Its tone is warm and bittersweet, a cozy melancholy with genuine heartache around grief, loneliness, and a family shaped by hurt, including depictions of emotional cruelty and bullying. The supernatural transformations are played for gentle comedy rather than horror, and there is no graphic violence and little sexual content. The emotional arcs follow characters who have been shut away from others slowly learning to trust and open up. It suits a rainy weekend, a comfort rewatch, or a late evening with a cup of tea, and it is for viewers who want a sincere, low-intensity story about found family, healing, and kindness.
