The story

Gears of War 2 is a third-person shooter built around tactical use of cover. Players fight through a campaign as a soldier of the Coalition of Ordered Governments, carrying a limited loadout of weapons and using cover, melee attacks, and the series' chainsaw bayonet against enemy forces. It supports cooperative campaign play and a range of competitive multiplayer modes, and introduces Horde mode, in which up to five players survive escalating waves of enemies together.

What it’s like

Grimy, washed-out browns and sickly olive greens, with sweat-slicked faces lit by muzzle flashes and the orange glow of burning cities. The camera hugs a hulking third-person shoulder, so every firefight feels cramped and close, and the cover system snaps you against crumbling concrete while the world shudders around you. Sound does a lot of the work: thudding heavy weapons, the rasp of a chainsaw bayonet, guttural alien roars, and a pounding martial score that swells whenever a fight tips over. The vibe is grim, pulpy and loud, with a brotherly gallows humour cutting through the carnage. It suits a late-night session with friends on the couch, or a solo play that wants tension and momentum without quiet. Violence is constant, bloody and visceral, with frequent gore, dismemberment and death; the tone is intense rather than gentle. Built for players who want co-op chaos, relentless wave-survival pressure, and a hard-edged sci-fi war spectacle.
