The story
Left 4 Dead 2 is a cooperative first-person shooter video game, the sequel to Valve Corporation's Left 4 Dead. The Game builds upon cooperatively focused gameplay and Valve's proprietary Source engine, the same game engine used in the original Left 4 Dead. Set during the aftermath of an apocalyptic pandemic, Left 4 Dead 2 focuses on four new Survivors, fighting against hordes of the Infected, who develop severe psychosis and exhibit zombie-like tendencies. The Survivors must fight their way through five campaigns, interspersed with safe houses that act as checkpoints, with the goal of escape at each campaign's finale.
What it’s like
Gritty, sun-bleached Southern and urban decay give this one its look: sodden swamp dusk, rain-slicked highways, half-lit stadium concourses, and dim safe rooms lit by a single bulb or flickering television. The Source engine renders it all in saturated, slightly grimy colour, with sweat, blood and muzzle flash punching through the gloom, and the sound design does much of the work, with distant moans, sudden shrieks and a tense, pulsing score that rises and drops with the horde. The feel is adrenaline-heavy and loud, a cooperative romp that shifts quickly between frantic firefights and tense quiet, best played with friends on a weekend night or in a late-evening session. Violence is constant and cartoonishly gory, with zombies dismembered and torn apart in close-quarters combat, but the horror is more about panic and pressure than dread, and the tone is often darkly comic. Four survivors bicker, banter and dig in together through five campaigns, so camaraderie matters more than any single arc. It suits players who want co-op chaos, a shared sense of adrenaline and a gleeful sense of gore.
